Labels Issued By Manufacturers in Sets or Series

Text will be written for clarity and simplicity in the past tense.

To promote sales, manufacturers, quite often in association with wholesalers, issued matchbox labels in sets or series.  For the collector, this gave a different slant to collecting as it helped to introduce themes and also as most sets/series were randomly packaged, it gave a new opportunity to interact with fellow collectors.

As far as my encyclopedia and this store is concerned, there is a distinct difference between sets and series and, the definitions for both are given below:

  1. For the benefit of collectors worldwide, the definition of sets in relation to The Sussex Matchbox Labels Worldwide Simplified Encyclopedia and this store is:-  SETS - A number of matchbox labels based on a similar design or theme and issued by a match manufacturer between two specific dates.  However, these matchbox labels did not always carry the description of the design or theme and additionally, quite often gave no information as to the country of origin or the contents within the box.  The biggest problem for collectors is that many of the match manufacturers had less than accurate records relating to the labels they had printed or printed themselves.  Consequently, Sets are often only identified as a result of extensive research by dedicated collectors.

For the benefit of collectors worldwide, the definition of series in relation to The Sussex Matchbox Labels Worldwide Simplified Encyclopedia and this store is:- SERIES - A number of matchbox labels based on a similar design or theme and issued by a match manufacture between two specific dates.  However, unlike matchbox labels issued in SETS, these labels identify to the collector that they are from a series in that each label will carry some or all of the following:
